advice on website development

Every artist wants a web presence. Why not? The internet is THE best marketing tool for an artist. Unfortunately, not all artists have the patience or the expertise to develop, host and promote a professional website that gets it done right.

Here are a few questions:

  1. Do you have a domain name registered already?

  2. Have you gotten a web host to carry your site on its server?

  3. Do you have a name for your site? something that is original, but has been scooped up by the domain farmers.

  4. Thought any about what kinds of info should be on your site?

  5. Do you have any experience creating webs?

  6. What type of software will you use?

  7. Will you sell artwork on your pages? If so, you'll want your site to be capable of e-commerce, but that means a whole other level of expense

  8. Do you have an idea of the overall cost of having a website, not just in money, but what will it cost you as far as your valuable time?...

  9. Know anything about search engines and how to make your site search-engine friendly?

  10. And what about marketing your web...are you thinking that if you build it, they will come?

The facts

Building a website is costly and time-consuming, plus you must maintain it, regularly, and keep content fresh, you have to create meta-tags, submit it to search engines, etc...the list goes on. There's a considerable learning curve, a lot of things to keep in mind when you begin to build your website.

  11.  Have you considered having somebody else create your site for you?

If so, Northernfront.net for an economic alternative. We offer "webspace" for professional artists who don’t have time to design, build and maintain their own sites. By joining us, your time is freed up so you can do what you should be doing...

CREATING MORE ART!!

We provide a "web-presence" for artists at economic rates [365 days a year for less than the cost of a postcard printing]. YOU SAVE TIME AND MONEY. YOU MINIMIZE YOUR DEVELOPMENT COSTS!

Promotion and marketing

Artist Involvement The marketing of art is necessary for the development of art. So said John McPhee in his book The Ransom of Russian Art.  Marketing is "the mechanism that makes the artist able to survive and produce." He called it the "nexus"--we call it our main objective. While merchandising art is important to all of us, and while "e-commerce" is absolutely vital to our survival--NorthernFront is not strictly a merchant site, we are not a typical art gallery. Our philosophy is tied to this nexus of Internet Marketing and Promotion through word of mouth, email campaigns, and participation in public exhibitions. For us, greater Marketing Potential means Greater Sales Potential. One of the key elements to internet marketing is this: the greater the number of people who see your page and are connected to you, the greater will be your  sales potential.

Here at NorthernFront.net, you are the focus -- we pledge to actively market your work, but ask of you, the artist, to be involved in the nexus, too...what's more, as an artist "collective" we all depend on your involvement, self-promotion, input and support. Sales and site visitors will depend partially on you. Simple business:

1. Use your URL as a promotional tool -- always reference your webpage [URL/ Address]

  • List your web address on your business cards, résumé, bios, all promotions and correspondence.
  • add to the body of your emails, or use your Northern Front web address in your email signature as a signature
  • Create postcards and other promotional materials with your web address
  • Give your web address to friends, family, and people you meet

2. Check out our newsletter, Hop on Front! informing members, art patrons and the community at large of upcoming art opportunities, events and issues of interest in the area and the region. We send out Hop on Front! to an expanding mailing list at least twice monthly.][If you have art events that you’d like to publicize in the newsletter, please send.]

Forward Hop on Front! to everyone on your email list--not only does it boost viewers to your page, we all get hits on the site when it goes out.

3. Drive traffic to your webpage by linking your emails to your web page-- Let prospective buyers and established clients know about your art and your latest updates.

4. Cutting & Pasting images from your page to you email and by adding links to those images will attract hits on your page--allow friends and family to see samples of your art...you may even put the address to your page right in the “signature” section of your email.

5. Develop "Link exchanges"-- By adding a reciprocal link, you will gain viewers and so will your friend's site. Do you know someone that could help us with a reciprocal link on their business website? They can either link directly to your page address or to the site in general; either way, we'll link up to theirs. Talk to your friends. Remember, link exchanges will help drive traffic to your webpage and get more people seeing your artwork.

As long as northernfront.net stays afloat, so your page stays online...                top   | Home
